Fire Fighters and Swine Flu
As you know, the World Health Organization
has raised its pandemic alert for H1N1 (swine)
Flu to Phase 5, indicating that a global
outbreak of the disease is imminent. It has
advised all countries to immediately activate
pandemic preparedness plans.

To ensure members are aware of and take the necessary precautions for responding safely and effectively during this outbreak, the IAFF has developed a Remember the Basics tip sheet, an Interactive Resource Guide and a comprehensive database of additional resources.

Stop, Drop, Control®  is a high blood pressure
awareness and community health outreach campaign in
collaboration with Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation,
a leader high blood pressure management. To date, the
program has provided hundreds of IAFF affiliates with
materials and resources to conduct blood pressure screening
and educational activities among our members and in our
communities.

To request your copy of the Stop, Drop, Control High Blood Pressure Toolkit, scroll down this page and click on the request icon.
One of the key goals of the IAFF is to help maintain the health, wellness and safety of our members. This goal is essential for performing on the job and serving your community. High blood pressure is an important health concern, and the IAFF is proud to be part of this important initiative to improve blood pressure awareness among our members and within the general public.
This web site is a resource for fire fighters and their families to better understand the risks associated with high blood pressure and to help them manage their condition.

High blood pressure (HBP), or hypertension, is a major disease affecting approximately 73 million Americans (1 in 3 adults)

45 percent of on-duty fire fighter deaths are caused by heart disease each year
High blood pressure (presumably uncontrolled) is one of the contributing factors in on-duty cardiovascular deaths among fire fighters
Nearly three out of four fire fighters with high blood pressure do not have the condition adequately under control
